Itinerary

Day 1: Sydney To Lord Howe Island

Sunday 18 April: Today your Qantas flight departs at 1.30pm from Sydney. Arrive into Lord Howe Island where you will be transferred to your accommodation before setting off on a short stroll to the island’s Museum and Visitor Centre for a tour briefing. Later enjoy a pre-dinner lecture at the Museum about the island’s World Heritage status and threats to its ecology.

Saturday 2 October: Today your Qantas flight departs at 11.55am from Sydney. Arrive into Lord Howe Island where you will be transferred to your accommodation before gaining an insight into what your tour will entail during a tour briefing this afternoon.

Stay: 7 nights, Leanda Lei Apartments or upgrade to the luxurious Arajilla Retreat.

Day 2: Lord Howe Island

Monday 19 April:  This morning after breakfast Ian will accompany you on an easy walk to Transit Hill where there is a viewing platform that offers a 360-degree view of Lord Howe Island. Look out for the island’s signature plants, the Kentia and Curly palms that dominate the landscape in many places. This afternoon walk to Clear Place to see the tall palm forest and seabird life. This evening’s pre-dinner lecture will be on the Birds of Lord Howe Island.

Sunday 3 October: This morning after breakfast Ian will walk with you around the settlement to introduce you to the island’s plants and many birds. He will then take accompany you on an easy walk to Transit Hill where there is a viewing platform that offers a 360-degree view of Lord Howe Island. Look out for the island’s signature plants, the Kentia and Curly palms that dominate the landscape in many places. This evening’s pre-dinner lecture will be an overview of the geology, flora, fauna and conservation.

Day 3: Lord Howe Island

Tuesday 20 April: Set off on a nature day walk and discover some of the island’s birdlife. Observe the waders at Mosely Park then follow the track to Muttonbird Point, where it is possible to view the masked boobies nesting there. Continue to Rocky Run stream and Boat Harbour where you’ll enjoy lunch before walking back through tall rainforest.

Monday 4 October: Today’s island exploration will include a bus tour to see the many landmarks and learn about Lord Howe Island’s history. Also immerse yourself in a walk to Mt Stevens Reserve to learn about the Kentia Palm industry. Gain an insight into the plants of Lord Howe Island at this evening’s pre-dinner lecture.

Day 4: Lord Howe Island

Wednesday 21 April:  This morning take a glass bottom boat on a discovery of the marine life in the world’s most southerly coral reef and enjoy the option to snorkel. This afternoon Ian will accompany you on a Botanical walk to Malabar, along the way learning about endemic plant species. This does involve a fairly steep climb (approx. 200 metres altitude), but with breaks along the way and your effort will rewarded with stunning views including dramatic displays of red-tailed tropicbirds flying off the cliffs.

Tuesday 5 October: This morning make your way to Little Island, located at the base of the island’s mountains. Here you’ll learn about the volcanic origins while soaking in the spectacular scenery. Ian will then guide you to Clear Place, where you’ll get to witness the tall palm forest, massive banyan trees and the array of seabirds.

Day 5: Lord Howe Island

Thursday 22 April: Today’s island exploration will include a bus transfer and walk to Goathouse Cave, 400 metres above sea level, where Ian will point the island’s endemic montane flora species, many of which are endangered. At this altitude you can find the Big Mountain Palm, with large golf ball-sized fruits. This is a moderate walk which has some steep sections, however there will be plenty of rest breaks along the way. Alternatively, you may choose a more challenging full-day walk to Mount Gower, 875 metres above sea level. Ian will share his knowledge of Lord Howe Island’s history and conservation practices during a pre-dinner lecture this evening.

Wednesday 6 October: Enjoy a morning at leisure. After lunch, at low tide, set off on a reef walk at Ned’s Beach rock platform to explore the rockpools and learn about the rich marine creatures of the intertidal areas. You may then like to spend some time swimming or snorkelling before enjoying some historical movies at the public hall.

Day 6: Lord Howe Island, North Bay

Friday 23 April & Thursday 7 October: 

Today, set off for a full day trip to North Bay. Travelling by boat, you’ll arrive at a pristine beach on the northern tip of the island, inaccessible by land. Here the waters are a snorkeller’s paradise, rich in colourful corals, turtles, stingrays and an estimated 500 different species of fish. The birdlife is also spectacular, and on a short nature walk look out for colonies of sooty terns, brown noddies, black noddies, as well as red-tailed tropicbirds and waders at low tide. Enjoy a barbecue lunch before returning to your accommodation later this afternoon. Tonight’s lecture by Ian will focus on the marine life of Lord Howe Island

Day 7: Lord Howe Island

Saturday 24 April: Enjoy free time this morning before an early lunch at Ned’s Beach followed by a reef walk along the rock platform, exploring rock pools while learning about the marine creatures on the intertidal areas. You may like to enjoy a spot of swimming or snorkelling here.

Friday 8 October: Spend this morning relaxing then take a glass bottom boat on a discovery of the marine life in the world’s most southerly coral reef and enjoy the option to snorkel.

Day 8: Lord Howe Island To Sydney

Sunday 25 April & Saturday 9 October:

Enjoy free time this morning. After lunch you will be transferred to the airport for your return flight to Sydney
