In love with Lord Howe Island By Sara Colthorpe   I had always known Lord Howe Island to be a haven to escape reality. A picturesque island getaway that appeared almost untouched. Something that appeared so far away, yet was actually so close.  Lord Howe Island is located off the eastern coast of New South Wales and sits around the same latitude as Port Macquarie. It is a piece of paradise that as Australian's we are lucky enough to call our own and due to the small amount of visitors it allows at any one time, it has remained in pristine condition. Popular for honeymooners or those with a keen interest in nature walks, bird life and amazing marine life. After being presented the opportunity from Oxley Travel and Eastern Air Services to venture on the first direct service from Newcastle I was intrigued to find out what Lord Howe Island was all about.  After checking in at a much quieter than usual Newcastle Airport it was a surreal experience to be led to the one and only aircraft waiting on the tarmac. Our small group of 7 were greeted and welcomed onboard our Eastern Air Services flight by our pilot Mark who has over 30 years experience flying to Lord Howe Island. With a prompt take off we were off on our 1hr 45min flight to Lord Howe Island. The flight was just as smooth as the landing, and on arrival I was stunned by the scenery that awaited me. Palm trees covered the island with the towering Mount Gower and Mount Lidgebird providing a stunning cloud-capped mountain backdrop to the entire island.
